As Boobs4Food embarks on a mid-year vacation to Hawaii, our favorite detox’n'grub locale for rest and relaxation, we’re honoring volunteerism as our mid-year passion in progress theme. In honor of last month, April, being National Volunteer Month, and our return to Hawaii to vacation and to volunteer again, our upcoming trip this week is a reminder on the importance of helping out communities in small ways that matter.

Passion in Progress is big on many things: food, music, art and travel, but one of our biggest passions in volunteering. We are constantly reminded of the words one of our nation’s leaders shared, “Loving your country shouldn’t just mean watching fireworks on the 4th of July”. We started Boobs4Food a little less than a year ago and traveled to Hawaii then for vacation but to also volunteer while on our break because we felt grateful for the lives we are able to live and we had a strong desire to pay it forward.

Boobs4Food participated in Kidney Walk SF 2010 in May. Photo courtesy of Miguel Escobedo

What drives us to volunteer is the feeling of fulfillment and empowerment in knowing we can help our communities in small ways. We’ve realized that those in our generation aren’t held back from volunteering or from giving back not because they aren’t willing, but that they haven’t had the access to opportunities to do so or they don’t want to do it all alone. Whether it’s pitching in to fight hunger through giving your time or supporting a Kidney or Cancer Walk or even mentoring an neighborhood adolescent – all of these efforts are wanted, needed and appreciated to build better and stronger communities on a local and global level.

Dinner service @ The Midnight Mission in LA's Skid Row

On our upcoming trip to Hawaii in a couple days, we’ll be meeting up with our new friends at non-profit organization, Hands In Helping Out, to learn more about how they’ve successfully built an organization promoting the importance of volunteering in local communities because they realized there was a societal and personal need and desire to take on something they were passionate about: volunteering. We’ll also be meeting up with Hawaii Charity, a philanthropic social concierge serving results-oriented organizations, to learn more about how local communities in Hawaii are helping each other throughout the island.

This summer, whether you’re on summer break, on vacation or on a weekend, think about finding a cause or organization to donate your time to in building a better and stronger community as a gesture of loving your country and community beyond watching fireworks on the the Fourth of July.

Food Runners is a volunteer organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in San Francisco. Our volunteers deliver over 10 tons of food a week to agencies feeding people in need. Food Runners picks up excess perishable and prepared food from businesses such as restaurants, caterers, bakeries, hospitals, event planners, corporate cafeterias, and hotels and delivers it directly to shelters and neighborhood programs that feed the hungry.

Artist Info:

Hanni El Khatib (taken from Innovative Leisure website)

“With a Black Keys-ish, authentic rock and roll vibe, San Francisco-based Hanni El Khatib is a one-man band that’s been selling out smoky bars and filling them full of bluesy electric guitar, drums and fuzzy amps. El Khatib is joined live by a drummer, but he writes, records and produces all songs on his own. One recent single, “You Rascal You,” is a masterful reinterpretation of a ’30s jazz standard.” – Gibson

“Hanni El-Khatib is one of the most talented acts in L.A. right now, a one-man band, singing, songwriting, and producing all on his own and synthesizing 50s and 60s garage rock, soul, blues, and even a bit of folk. El-Khatib’s attitude is his greatest attribute; anyone who strives to write songs for “anyone who’s ever been shot or hit by a train” and brings with him the rawness of Phil Spector, Jack White, the Shangri-Las, and the Black Keys.” – LA Weekly

White Arrows

Made up of L.A. natives Mickey Schiff & Henry Schiff, JP Caballero, Steven Vernet, Rob Banks, and Damon Kellard, White Arrows is a band we’d like to see appear at Coachella. Part electro, part rock, 100% dance until the lights turn off kind of fun. We can’t wait to get down with the White Arrows set at our show! To get a preview of their sound, download their remixes from The Voyeur album.

Boobs4Food SF will be volunteering at Project Open Hand in San Francisco Saturday, November 20th from 11:00am – 4:00pm. We hope you can join us for a few rewarding hours providing “meals with love” to the clients of this amazing program especially during the season of giving and when times are especially tough. Common duties include helping out in the kitchen, grocery center, packing food, etc.

Since 1985, Project Open Hand has been providing “meals with love” to people living with serious illnesses and to seniors in San Francisco and Alameda County.

Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life of the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition information, education and referral for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; and meal service for homebound critically ill people under the age of 60.

Please wear closed toe shoes, dress comfortably and cozy as there might be light lifting. We also recommend leaving your valuables at home or in your car. A light lunch is served during our shift.

Street parking is available along Polk, please read all signs carefully to avoid parking tickets. We recommend parking at AMC 1000 and get your parking ticket validated in the movie theater lobby before returning to your car.

Spaces are limited, please sign up soon. However you RSVP with us, we will contact you directly to inform on final confirmation as tracking Facebook RSVPs can be challenging as many of you know. Please stay to grub with us afterwards as we’ll pick somewhere fabulous to eat around Larkin (i.e. Lers Ros Thai, Turtle Tower, etc.)

For more information, please visit www.Boobs4Food.com or DM us at www.twitter.com/Boobs4Food. Please also follow POH at @ProjectOpenHand

We look forward to fighting hunger with you!
