White Arrows

Made up of L.A. natives Mickey Schiff & Henry Schiff, JP Caballero, Steven Vernet, Rob Banks, and Damon Kellard, White Arrows is a band we’d like to see appear at Coachella. Part electro, part rock, 100% dance until the lights turn off kind of fun. We can’t wait to get down with the White Arrows set at our show! Boobs4Food SF: Bake Sale for Haiti

Armed with a couple ideas, inspiration from our friends over at MO2H, a big appetite and a whole lot of commitment to give back to communities by fighting hunger, Boobs4Food would like to thank YOU for your continued support along this crazy ride. In the last 7 months we’ve grown accustomed to wearing hairnets, working in cold kitchens and serving the community with plenty of smiles and gratitude. We ended 2009 with two Happy Hour Food Drives in San Francisco and Los Angeles to support the SF Food Bank and LA Regional Food Bank. These mixers gave all of us a chance to get to know you, our supporters & new friends, in a social setting and share why we love what we do in bringing together food and a worthy cause.

B4F LA: Midnight Mission

Only 4 weeks into 2010, and we’ve already gained quite the momentum with over a hundred new Twitter followers in two weeks, a growing base of new supporters with each monthly event across California (and around the world), made the hairnet the must have accessory of 2010 and we’ve been participating in community events to help the disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

January included Boobs4Food’s @LifeWithAWhisk aka Patricia Chen, baking up her homemade Semolina Olive Oil Cake for the Bake Sale for Haiti, organized by Saimin Nosrat, which raised over $22,000 from three locations around the Bay Area (Pizzaiolo in OAK, Gioia in Berkeley & Bi-Rite Market in SF). The proceeds from the bake sale went to nonprofit medical aid organization Partners in Health. In Los Angeles, Patricia also whipped up her Pear Pistachio Brown Butter Cake for the Cookies Without Border Bake Sale, organized by the team behind No Cookie Left Behind. The LA bake sale raised more than $5000 for Doctors Without Borders and their Haiti relief efforts.

Boobs4Food also volunteered our time at The Midnight Mission in Skid Row of Downtown Los Angeles for their dinner service and at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco for lunch service as we witnessed how many people in our communities depend on community resources such as Midnight Mission and Glide Memorial Church to stay alive and warm in the winter.

We have much to look forward to in 2010 as the events don’t stop here and our commitment to fight hunger continues. Our upcoming schedule includes February’s event this Saturday 2/6/2010 at Project Open Hand as we volunteer in the kitchen and grocery center in an effort to provide “meals with love” to people living with serious illness and seniors across the Bay Area. On Saturday 2/20/2010, our first benefit concert food drive will take place at Element Lounge with long time B4F supporters (and volunteers) DDL Roundhouse taking the stage and collecting food for the Chinatown Community Development Center. March will conclude with lunch service with the Chinatown Community Development Center as we help out at their monthly “Super Sunday” gathering with over 300 seniors and 100 families that reside in the Ping Yuen Housing Project. We’ll be serving up lunch, helping their educational program for the day and distributing food to the community.

Founded in 1914, The Midnight Mission has been helping the homeless of Skid Row get back on their feet. Some of the many services offered include Emergency Overnight Shelter, Hot Meals, Clothing, Drug & Alcohol Recovery Program, Continuing Education, Career Counseling & Family Housing. If you cannot join us during our Boobs4Food Dinner Service, we still recommend volunteering at The Midnight Mission some time in the near future. Don’t worry, we’ll definitely have more events at The Midnight Mission in 2010 if you can’t make it in January. Perfect combo: happy hour & fighting hunger on a rainy day!

December in LA this year has proved to be a mix of tumultuous weather and it was definitely pouring with the clouds raining happiness on Boobs4Food for our first ever Boobs4Food LA Holiday Happy Hour and Food Drive. We organized this event in LA the week before our Boobs4Food SF event of similar nature – fighting hunger and getting together with our existing and new Boobs4Food supporters.

We held our Boobs4Food LA Happy Hour + Food Drive at the incredible Copa D’Oro Bar – a quintessential establishment that truly knows the meaning of a hand-crafted cocktail…and a hard to beat Happy Hour Drink List. With their $5 Happy Hour offerings of amazing libations such as the Gold Rush, Pisco Sour and Moscow Mule, we invited many of our friends to come out with their bounty of non-perishable foods to support LA Regional Food Bank during this holiday season. Los Angeles is often seen as a city of glitz and glamour yet few realize that many residents of LA County struggle alongside over 45 million Americans who are “food insecure” – meaning that they are deprived of daily access to adequate amounts of nutritious food, as noted by the LA Regional Food Bank press release in November.

With the help of our Boobs4Food supporters, we pulled together more non-perishables than we anticipated while having an amazing time catching up with old and new friends who had not yet had a chance to come out to one of our volunteer events since the inception of Boobs4Food this past summer. Since our start, Boobs4Food LA has devoted much of our Southern California efforts to support LA Regional Food Bank given it’s strength within the region and being one of the largest food banks in the United States. Through their organization and a network of over 500 charitable agencies, they supply enough food for 750,000 meals weekly in Los Angeles County. LA Regional Food Bank’s President and CEO Michael Flood has even noted that the demand at the food pantries served by the Food Bank is up approximately 34% percent since this time last year. Team B4F LA's Volunteer Launch Event at Los Angeles Regional Food Bank 8/15/2009

It has been a couple days since we dispersed from LA Food Bank to go about our Saturday afternoons, so we want to thank all of you for making the effort to come out so early on a Sat Morning to help our cause out.  It was not the easiest of tasks in the world, but you all did great and we are really glad to see how much work we did – so much in fact we had to have the guy bring in another pallet or two of pears!  Not only are we thankful for you guys coming out, but also for the opportunity to meet new friends and see old ones again.

We hope that you’ll share your Boobs4Food experience with movers and shakers in your own circles and encourage others to come for our future events. The next event is still being looked for, but we are looking for a September date.
