Artist Info:

Hanni El Khatib (taken from Innovative Leisure website)

“With a Black Keys-ish, authentic rock and roll vibe, San Francisco-based Hanni El Khatib is a one-man band that’s been selling out smoky bars and filling them full of bluesy electric guitar, drums and fuzzy amps. El Khatib is joined live by a drummer, but he writes, records and produces all songs on his own. One recent single, “You Rascal You,” is a masterful reinterpretation of a ’30s jazz standard.” – Gibson

“Hanni El-Khatib is one of the most talented acts in L.A. right now, a one-man band, singing, songwriting, and producing all on his own and synthesizing 50s and 60s garage rock, soul, blues, and even a bit of folk. El-Khatib’s attitude is his greatest attribute; anyone who strives to write songs for “anyone who’s ever been shot or hit by a train” and brings with him the rawness of Phil Spector, Jack White, the Shangri-Las, and the Black Keys.” – LA Weekly

White Arrows

Made up of L.A. natives Mickey Schiff & Henry Schiff, JP Caballero, Steven Vernet, Rob Banks, and Damon Kellard, White Arrows is a band we’d like to see appear at Coachella. Part electro, part rock, 100% dance until the lights turn off kind of fun. We can’t wait to get down with the White Arrows set at our show! To get a preview of their sound, download their remixes from The Voyeur album.

December in LA this year has proved to be a mix of tumultuous weather and it was definitely pouring with the clouds raining happiness on Boobs4Food for our first ever Boobs4Food LA Holiday Happy Hour and Food Drive. We organized this event in LA the week before our Boobs4Food SF event of similar nature – fighting hunger and getting together with our existing and new Boobs4Food supporters.

We held our Boobs4Food LA Happy Hour + Food Drive at the incredible Copa D’Oro Bar – a quintessential establishment that truly knows the meaning of a hand-crafted cocktail…and a hard to beat Happy Hour Drink List. With their $5 Happy Hour offerings of amazing libations such as the Gold Rush, Pisco Sour and Moscow Mule, we invited many of our friends to come out with their bounty of non-perishable foods to support LA Regional Food Bank during this holiday season. Los Angeles is often seen as a city of glitz and glamour yet few realize that many residents of LA County struggle alongside over 45 million Americans who are “food insecure” – meaning that they are deprived of daily access to adequate amounts of nutritious food, as noted by the LA Regional Food Bank press release in November.

Boobs4Food Co-Founder Jessica stuffing the donation box with Beef Stew.

With the help of our Boobs4Food supporters, we pulled together more non-perishables than we anticipated while having an amazing time catching up with old and new friends who had not yet had a chance to come out to one of our volunteer events since the inception of Boobs4Food this past summer. Since our start, Boobs4Food LA has devoted much of our Southern California efforts to support LA Regional Food Bank given it’s strength within the region and being one of the largest food banks in the United States. Through their organization and a network of over 500 charitable agencies, they supply enough food for 750,000 meals weekly in Los Angeles County. LA Regional Food Bank’s President and CEO Michael Flood has even noted that the demand at the food pantries served by the Food Bank is up approximately 34% percent since this time last year. (LA Food Bank Press Release)

Please take a moment and enjoy the photo recap of our Boobs4Food LA Happy Hour and Food Drive. We look forward to seeing you at our next event this January 17th at The Midnight Mission.

Summer, as Angelenos know it, has only recently gotten under way.

People all over the country may herald its arrival with their Memorial Day bar-b-ques and balmy nights, but our unbearable heat has only been consistent over the past couple of weeks, and is sure to surge at least twice more before Halloween. Oh, Indian summer, is our idea of the season, but this morning at the Hollywood Farmers’ Market, I caught glimpses of what the rest of the country is likely experiencing — oranges, yellows, dark greens, oh my!

As much as I love stone fruit, and squeal when the first cherries and apricots appear, I wait on the edge of my seat for fall. Signs announcing the last week for Flavor Kings or Flavor Grenades have been displayed at the stands lately, and at Top Notch Produce, mango-flavored nectarines and white peaches have been replaced by Asian pears and green grapes. Other stands that have been solely featuring samples of drupes are now offering Fuji and Gala apple chunks — the avocado and cherimoya stand is even giving away free mini-apples to try. The boys at the stand where I get my favorite eggs (whose location I still won’t reveal) have made it known that fall is really their season to shine as most stands sell similar fare to theirs during the summer months, so soon their tables will be overflowing with squash and lesser-known varieties of potatoes.

The reds, yellows, oranges, and sometimes purples of heirloom tomatoes have colored the market beautifully for a few weeks now, and today, I saw pumpkins at a couple stands. Maybe it was the relative emptiness of the pathways due to the Labor Day exodus, or the hazy glow that blanketed the skies from Station Fire overflow, but with the sighting of the pumpkins, tears nearly welled in my eyes and it really felt like fall was upon us. Sleepless nights and the futile search for the cold spot on a sweat-flecked pillow are still ahead for us, but at least we know where we can get a taste for turning leaves, billowy breezes, and crisp mornings. Apple pie will soon be made!!

It has been a couple days since we dispersed from LA Food Bank to go about our Saturday afternoons, so we want to thank all of you for making the effort to come out so early on a Sat Morning to help our cause out. It was not the easiest of tasks in the world, but you all did great and we are really glad to see how much work we did – so much in fact we had to have the guy bring in another pallet or two of pears! Not only are we thankful for you guys coming out, but also for the opportunity to meet new friends and see old ones again.

We hope that you’ll share your Boobs4Food experience with movers and shakers in your own circles and encourage others to come for our future events. The next event is still being looked for, but we are looking for a September date.

For a quick photo recap of our day at the LA Food Bank, please click here.

Thank you again for waking up, showing up and giving back to ensure others are fortunate enough to eat a good meal once in a while like we all can.
